About this video
"Ignorance of the law is no excuse" is more than a saying — it is Texas Penal Code § 8.03(a). Former prosecutor Brian Foley explains the rule and its one real exception: when you reasonably relied on an official written statement of the law, such as a court opinion or an administrative agency's written interpretation, that later turned out to be wrong. He also explains how mistake of law differs from mistake of fact under § 8.02.
